We Started Dropping Bombs Today

We started dropping bombs today
It came as no surprise
With all the talk and threats and bluster
The door was closed on other paths
But somehow when it finally got here
It didn’t seem quite real
I can’t sustain the righteous outrage
So quiet sadness must suffice
I listen to the news each morning
Until I have to turn it off
There’s only so much death and darkness
A person can absorb without a break
The battles show up live in real time
Complete with play by play critique
We watch with morbid fascination
While war rolls on before our eyes
The cost cannot be comprehended
In dollars and in lives
We never seem to learn the lesson
That the price is just too high
I know God deals in transformation
Taking death and giving life
But just how long will God keep helping
Before the final bill comes due
We started dropping bombs today
It came as no surprise
That fact alone should be sufficient
To scare us down the path towards peace
